Teaser Tuesday - Words of Radiance, by Brandon Sanderson

Teaser Tuesdays is a weekly bookish meme, hosted by MizB of Should Be Reading. Anyone can play along! Just:
* Grab your current read
* Open to a random page
* Share two (2) “teaser” sentences from somewhere on that page
* BE CAREFUL NOT TO INCLUDE SPOILERS! (make sure that what you share doesn’t give too much away! You don’t want to ruin the book for others!)
* Share the title and author, too, so that other Teaser Tuesday participants can add the book to their To Be Read (TBR) Lists if they like your teasers!

----------

I am currently reading Words of Radiance, by Brandon Sanderson.  This is a huge novel, and it will probably take me awhile to get through, which means we'll get lots of Teasers out of it!  In this Tease, Shallan watches a Highstorm approaching across the Shattered Plains...

The Tease:

"The stormwall.

A huge sheet of water and debris blown before the storm.  In places, it flashed with light from behind, revealing movement and shadows within.  Like the skeleton of a hand when light illuminated the flesh, there was something inside this wall of destruction."

I am currently reading Words of Radiance, by Brandon Sanderson.  This is a huge novel, and it will probably take me awhile to get through, which means we'll get lots of Teasers out of it!  In this Tease, Shallan has finally reached the Shattered Plains, and finds herself in a place of relative safety...

The Tease:

"In her sitting room - her sitting room - thumps announced the footmen arriving with her trunks.  They left a moment later, closing the door.  for the first time in quite a long while, Shallan found herself not fighting for her survival or worrying about being murdered by one of her traveling companions.

So she fell asleep."

The Tease:

"Shallan gasped at the sudden flare of color.  It disrupted the landscape like breaking lightning in an otherwise clear sky.  Shallan set down her spheres - Tyn was having her practice palming them - and stood up in the wagon, steadying herself with her freehand on the back of her seat.  Yes, it was unmistakable.  Brilliant red and yellow on an otherwise dull canvas of brown and green."

I am currently reading Words of Radiance, by Brandon Sanderson.  This is a huge novel, and it will probably take me awhile to get through, which means we'll get lots of Teasers out of it!  In this Tease, Kaladin muses about his new job of protecting highprince Dalinar...

The Tease:

"Sometimes, though, it seemed like his job was impossible to do well.  During the highstorm last week, someone had again sneaked into Dalinar's rooms, scrawling a second number on the wall.  Counting it down, it pointed to the same date a little over a month away."

One of my reading goals for 2014 is to reread some of my favorite books, and I'm beginning with one of my all-time favorite fantasy novels. For a good number of years, Prince Rohan - in spite of, or maybe because of, his flaws - was the perfect man in my eyes and definitely my first Book Crush.

This week, Rohan finds himself in a difficult situation...

The Tease:

"Night again, hot and close.  The sixth night since Ianthe.  Rohan turned away from the dinner laid out for him.  Food, wine, even water were suspect.  He trusted neither his tongue nor his nose, for everything tasted and smelled of dranath to him. He was over the worst of it, having eaten in the last few days only those things he considered least dangerous - unsliced fruit from which he peeled the skin, dragon tail cactus root washed clean of its sauces, a few other things.  His stomach growled at times with emptiness, but he had no other way of ensuring that he ingested no more of the drug.  He found it ironic that the dranath that had saved his dragons was so great a danger to him.."

One of my reading goals for 2014 is to reread some of my favorite books, and I'm beginning with one of my all-time favorite fantasy novels. Many people don't care for it, but I don't even understand those people.  I love this story, and while it might not be perfect, it's pretty darn close in my mind.  For a good number of years, Prince Rohan - in spite of, or maybe because of, his flaws - was the perfect man in my eyes and definitely my first Book Crush.

This week we see Rohan through his sister's eyes for a brief moment at the funeral of their father...

The Tease:

"Rohan stood apart and alone, holding a torch in his hand.  The flame turned his hair to molten gold and sank his eyes into darkness.  He was a stranger tonight.  For almost the first time, Tobin could see their father in him; the Desert had claimed him for its prince."

----------

I've decided that in 2013, I'm going to spend some of my time rereading a few of my old favorites, and so last week I started one of my favorite fantasy novels.  Many people don't care for it, feeling that it is poorly written, plotted, and that the characters and themes are unoriginal.  I don't understand those people.  I love this story, and I love the characters, and while it might not be perfect, it's pretty darn close in my mind.  For a good number of years, Prince Rohan - in spite of, or maybe because of, his flaws - was the perfect man in my eyes and definitely my first Book Crush.

Last week I took our Tease from Chapter 1, where we were introduced to Prince Zehava, the grand Patriarch of the desert.  This week, let's meet Sioned, a young Sunrunner destined to marry Zehava's son Rohan.

The Tease:

"When Sioned was three years old, the death of her parents left her brother Davvi, her elder by twelve winters, Lord of River Run.  Within a few years he married...but the new Lady of River Run was the possessive sort...Thus she purchased Sioned's entry into Goddess Keep.

There she found companionship among the other students and knowledge enough to feed her ravenous appetite for learning.  The small oddities that her sister-by-marriage derided as "fey" turned out to be indications that she had the faradhi gift and could become a Sunrunner.

Not everyone who west to Goddess Keep became faradhi, and Lady Andrade did not tolerate arrogance among those who could, or envy among those who could not.  But there were certain distinctions involved in becoming a Sunrunner: the rings of earned rank and periodic visits to the grove of pines near the keep.
In the year 693, when Sioned was sixteen and had earned the first silver circle on her right middle finger, she went to this place where, if her talents were strong and the Goddess was disposed to revelations, she might glimpse her future."

----------

I've decided that in 2013, I'm going to spend some of my time rereading a few of my old favorites; books that I love so much that I just have to pull them out and reread them every few years.  They're comfy and familiar, like a pair of soft, warm slippers, and each time I read them they evoke that feeling, that sense of nostalgia, that makes me feel I'm reading them for the first time.

This week I've started one of my favorite fantasy novels.  Many people don't care for it, feeling that it is poorly written, plotted, and that the characters and themes are unoriginal.  I don't understand those people.  At all.  I love this story, I love the characters, and while it might not be perfect, it's pretty darn close in my mind.  For a good number of years, Prince Rohan - in spite of, or maybe because of, his flaws - was the perfect man in my eyes and definitely my first Book Crush.

So let's kick this off with a tease from the very first page of the book, shall we?  I'm not even going to apologize for breaking the two sentence rule.

The Tease:

"Prince Zehava squinted into the sunlight and smiled his satisfaction.  All the signs were good for the hunt today: claw marks on the cliffs, wing marks on the sand, and the close cropping of bittersweet plants along the canyon ridges.  But the prince's perceptions were more subtle and had no need of these obvious signs.  He could feel the presence of his prey all along his skin, scent it in the air, sense it in every nerve.  His admirers said he could tell when the time was ripe for the hunt simply by glancing at the sky.  His enemies said it was not surprising that he could sense such things, for he himself had been dragon-spawned."

I'm currently reading Beautiful Creatures by Kami Garcia.  I saw the movie earlier this year and quite enjoyed it, and didn't even realize it was based on a novel until after watching the film.  This will be the last Tease from Beautiful Creatures, as I finished it today. In this scene, Ethan finds himself in the middle of a violent confrontation that he has little chance of surviving...

The Tease:

"Fire is loud, full of rage and chaos and destruction.  And fire was all around me.  The smoke in the air was so thick, I was choking on it.  The heat was singeing the hair right off my arms.  It was like a vision from the locket, or worse, like the last of my nightmares - the one where Lena was consumed by fire."

"I walked back over to the hole and reached into my pocket.  I opened the handkerchief with the familiar initials, and lifted the locket up by its chain.
Nothing.
No visions, and something told me there weren't going to be any more.
The locket had led us here, showed us what we needed to see."

The Tease:

"No matter how hard I scrubbed, I couldn't get my heart to stop pounding.  And over the smell of the Ivory soap and the Stop & Shop shampoo, I could still smell it.  Just barely, but I knew it was there.
Lemons and rosemary."

I'm about a quarter of the way through Lady of Ashes, by Christine Trent, but was informed via email today that an e-hold (my very first!) that I'd placed with my local library was ready for download!  Huzzah!!  How exciting - my first e-library book!  The thrill!  The joy!!

The complications... Holy hell but it was difficult!  I thought setting up the reader to place the hold was complicated, but that was nothing.  However, an hour later and multiple new logins, ID's, and passwords and I finally prevail!  It downloaded!  It works!!

So, tonight, in celebration, we shall have a Tease from the opening chapter of Insurgent:

The Tease:

"I wake with his name in my mouth.
Will.
Before I open my eyes, I watch him crumple to the pavement again. Dead.
My doing."

Since I finished Theft of Swords I've been itching to continue on with the story of Royce and Hadrian, so I started Rise of Empire, the second book in the series. Royce and Hadrian find themselves far from home on a mysterious mission, and as usual, surrounded by danger...

The Tease:
"Royce turned to see Thranic and Staul.  Staul held a torch and Thranic carried a crossbow.  "It's not safe to venture too far away from you friends, or didn't you think about that Royce?" Thranic said, then fired the crossbow at Royce's heart."

Since I finished Theft of Swords I've been itching to continue on with the story of Royce and Hadrian, so I started Rise of Empire, the second book in the series. Now, yesterday I had a dentist appointment, and in my anxious state I completely forgot to put together a Tease for this week until this afternoon!  But it is still Tuesday somewhere, so - better late than never - here is your Tease!

The Tease:
"Like most afternoons, Modina wandered the sequestered halls and chambers like a ghost searching for something long forgotten.  She heard that people with missing limbs felt an itching in a phantom leg or arm.  Perhaps it was the same for her, as she struggled to scratch at her missing life."

Since I finished Theft of Swords I've been itching to continue on with the story of Royce and Hadrian, so I started Rise of Empire, the second book in the series. In this scene, Amilia - recently a kitchen girl in the palace of the Empress Modina who has been raised to noble status to help train Modina to be a proper empress - worries that she might have an impossible job...

The Tease:
"Despite all the preparations, Modina simply was not ready.  The empress had only recently showed signs of lucidity and managed to follow directions, but no more than that.  In many ways she reminded Amilia of a dog.  Trained to sit and stay, a pup would do as it was told when the master was around, but how many could maintain their composure when left on their own.  A squirrel passing by would break their discipline and off they would go.  Amilia was not permitted on the balcony, and if anything unexpected happened, there was no telling how the empress would react.."

Since I finished Theft of Swords I've been itching to continue on with the story of Royce and Hadrian, so this week I started Rise of Empire.  Princess Arista has managed to convince the rogues to accompany her across a dangerous stretch of the country so that she might meet the leader of the Nationalist Movement and gain their aid in fighting against the empire that threatens to overwhelm her kingdom.

The Tease:
"Arista woke feeling disoriented and confused.  She had been dreaming about riding in her carriage.  She sat across from both Sauly and Esrahaddon.  Only, in her dream, Esrahaddon had hands and Sauly was wearing his bishop's Robes.  They were trying to pour brandy from a flask into a cup and were discussing something - a heated argument, but she could not recall it."
