I am currently reading Words of Radiance, by Brandon Sanderson.  This is a huge novel, and it will probably take me awhile to get through, which means we'll get lots of Teasers out of it!  In this Tease, Shallan watches a Highstorm approaching across the Shattered Plains...

The Tease:

"The stormwall.

A huge sheet of water and debris blown before the storm.  In places, it flashed with light from behind, revealing movement and shadows within.  Like the skeleton of a hand when light illuminated the flesh, there was something inside this wall of destruction."

The Tease:

"In her sitting room - her sitting room - thumps announced the footmen arriving with her trunks.  They left a moment later, closing the door.  for the first time in quite a long while, Shallan found herself not fighting for her survival or worrying about being murdered by one of her traveling companions.

So she fell asleep."

I am currently reading Words of Radiance, by Brandon Sanderson.  This is a huge novel, and it will probably take me awhile to get through, which means we'll get lots of Teasers out of it!  In this Tease, something unexpected disrupts Shallan's progress through a dreary landscape...

The Tease:

"Shallan gasped at the sudden flare of color.  It disrupted the landscape like breaking lightning in an otherwise clear sky.  Shallan set down her spheres - Tyn was having her practice palming them - and stood up in the wagon, steadying herself with her freehand on the back of her seat.  Yes, it was unmistakable.  Brilliant red and yellow on an otherwise dull canvas of brown and green."

The Tease:

"Sometimes, though, it seemed like his job was impossible to do well.  During the highstorm last week, someone had again sneaked into Dalinar's rooms, scrawling a second number on the wall.  Counting it down, it pointed to the same date a little over a month away."

----------

This week I'm reading Steelheart, by Brandon Sanderson.  So far it's a fascinating read.
From Goodreads:
There are no heroes.
Ten years ago, Calamity came. It was a burst in the sky that gave ordinary men and women extraordinary powers. The awed public started calling them Epics.
But Epics are no friend of man. With incredible gifts came the desire to rule. And to rule man you must crush his wills.
Nobody fights the Epics... nobody but the Reckoners. A shadowy group of ordinary humans, they spend their lives studying Epics, finding their weaknesses, and then assassinating them.
And David wants in. He wants Steelheart—the Epic who is said to be invincible. The Epic who killed David's father. For years, like the Reckoners, David's been studying, and planning—and he has something they need. Not an object, but an experience.
He's seen Steelheart bleed. And he wants revenge.

The Tease:

"The video image showed the ground, with me waving my hand in front of the lens.  Then it turned on Nightwielder and my heart leaped.
I tapped the screen, freezing the image."

Teaser Tuesday - The Emperor's Soul, by Brandon Sanderson

----------

I finished "Hunger" last week, and decided to try one of Brandon Sanderson's shorter works, and "The Emperor's Soul" seemed like a good place to start.  Shai is a "Forger" who can work a type of magic where she can create almost flawless imitations of items.  When she is caught trying to steal from the Emperor's Palace, she finds herself in a most precarious position - either accept a commission of an unheard of and nearly impossible Forgery, or face the executioner for her crimes.  She accepts the commission, of course, but whether she succeeds or fails, her fate might be the same either way.

The Tease:
"But he did not give her the plates back.  She hadn't expected him to, not now.  Not until their agreement was done - an agreement she was certain she would not live to see the end of, unless she escaped."

As The Last Battle rages, and as men fight against the minions of the Dark One, Perrin once again tracks down Slayer and confronts him.

The Tease:
"Perrin did not hold back in the fight with Slayer.  He did not try to distinguish between wolf and man.  He finally let everything out, every bit of rage at Slayer, every bit of pain at the deaths of his family--pressures which had been growing inside him unnoticed for months.
He let it out."

The Last Battle still rages, as men fight against the minions of the Dark One.  Demandred, one of the Forsaken, continuously rakes the battlefield with weaves of Power, killing hundreds, and calling for Rand to come face him in a duel.  But Rand is far away, locked in his own duel, and Galad steps forward to duel with Demandred, hoping to buy time and respite for his fellow warriors.  But a duel against a powerful Forsaken might be impossible to win...

The Tease:
"The sword glanced off the side of the armor, but cut true otherwise.
As Galad whipped back around, Demandred was limping.  The Forsaken grimaced.
"You've blooded me," he said.  "It has been a very long time since someone did that.""

This week, Nynaeve struggles to help Rand as he fights a duel, and she suddenly realizes that there is more to this fight than what she can see.  There are hidden elements, and possibly a trap...

The Tease:
"Nynaeve pressed her hand against (the woman's) wound, feeling helpless.  Dared she call for Rand to release her from the circle?  If she did, Moridin would undoubtedly turn on her and attack (the woman).  What to do?  If this woman died, Rand would lose control.
That, likely, would be the end of him...and of the Last Battle."

I'm finally just past the halfway point.  This week, our POV character is Mat, who is currently inspecting a battlefield while having a conversation about his wife...

The Tease:
""What's wrong?" Mat asked.  "I'd have assumed you would be happy to have me back.  It gives you someone else to scowl at."
"The Empress will follow where you go," she said.
"So she will," Mat said.  "As I'll follow where she goes, I suppose.
I hope that doesn't lead us in too many circles."

I'm slowly working my way through this massive tome, and am currently just short of page 450.  In this weeks' Teaser, the forces of good begin the attack on the Dark One...

The Tease:
"Aviendha ran with the rest of the Aiel through the gateways.  They surged, like floodwaters, into the valley of Thakan'dar.  Two waves, rushing down from opposite sides of the valley.  Aviendha did not carry a spear; that was not her place.  Instead, she was a spear."

I'm slowly working my way through this massive tome, and am currently just shy of page 250.  In this weeks' Teaser, Elayne finds herself with her soldiers in the Braem Woods, waiting to ambush an enemy army...

The Tease:
"It was difficult not to feel tiny in a wood like Braem.  though many of the trees were bare, Elayne could feel a thousand eyes watching her  from the depths of the forest.  She found herself thinking of the stories told to her as a child, stories of the Wood being full of brigands - some goodly, others with hearts as twisted as those of Darkfriends."

Over the weekend I finished The Kingdom of Gods by N.K. Jemisin, and was finally able to start A Memory of Light.  As some may know, every book in the series starts with the same passage - six sentences that signal the beginning of the new book and links it to all the others in the series.  For me personally, reading this first paragraph of the first chapter always gently eases me back into Jordan's world, and yet gives me chills at the same time.

The Tease:
"The Wheel of Time turns, and Ages come and pass, leaving memories that become legend.  Legend fades to myth, and even myth is long forgotten when the Age that gave it birth comes again.  In one Age, called the Third Age by some, an Age yet to come, an Age long past, a wind rose in the Mountains of Mist.  The wind was not the beginning.  There are neither beginnings nor endings to the turning of the Wheel of Time.
But is was a beginning."

Covering the Cover - Steelheart, by Brandon Sanderson

Earlier this week, Entertainment Weekly revealed the cover for a new novel by Brandon Sanderson that is due out in September 2013.  "Steelheart" is the first novel of Young Adult dark dystopian trilogy.

The blurb from Goodreads:
"Ten years ago, Calamity came.

He's seen Steelheart bleed. And he wants revenge."

I'm crazy excited for this novel to come out; the story sounds intriguing, and I'm a big fan of Sanderson's other works, so I can't wait to read this.  The cover is interesting, but doesn't speak much to me about the story itself.  I don't hate it, but I don't love it, either.

What do you think?

My thoughts before reading The Wheel of Time: Book 14 - A Memory of Light by Robert Jordan & Brandon Sanderson

The day has finally arrived.

Last year when it was announced that A Memory of Light would be released today it seemed soooooooo far away, but now, here we are.  Fourteen books, nearly 20 years, and it's all come down to this very day.

Do you have your copy yet?  I'm going to wait until this weekend to pick up mine, which will give me time to finish the book I'm currently reading, and allow me to focus and concentrate on this long awaited series finale.  But while I wait for Saturday, on the inside, I'm jumping up and down and screaming like a Belieber because I can't wait to start reading A Memory of Light.

But I will have to read it very slowly.  Just because I've been waiting for this ending for almost 20 years doesn't mean that I actually WANT it to end.  Finishing A Memory of Light will be a sad, sad joy, one to be rushed towards by running as slowly as possible.

That's how I'm feeling.  What are your thoughts?

Book Review - The Way of Kings

The Stormlight Archive, by Brandon Sanderson
1. The Way of Kings 11/01/2011 * * * * *

From Goodreads:
"Roshar is a world of stone and storms. Uncanny tempests of incredible power sweep across the rocky terrain so frequently that they have shaped ecology and civilization alike. Animals hide in shells, trees pull in branches, and grass retracts into the soiless ground. Cities are built only where the topography offers shelter.

It has been centuries since the fall of the ten consecrated orders known as the Knights Radiant, but their Shardblades and Shardplate remain: mystical swords and suits of armor that transform ordinary men into near-invincible warriors. Men trade kingdoms for Shardblades. Wars were fought for them, and won by them.

One such war rages on a ruined landscape called the Shattered Plains. There, Kaladin, who traded his medical apprenticeship for a spear to protect his little brother, has been reduced to slavery. In a war that makes no sense, where ten armies fight separately against a single foe, he struggles to save his men and to fathom the leaders who consider them expendable."

My Thoughts:
I have been a fan of Brandon Sanderson for a while now, so when I heard that he was planning a multi-novel epic fantasy series I was very excited, but also a little daunted.  Should I read each book as it was published like I've been doing with The Wheel of Time series for nearly 20 years?  Or should I wait until most or all were published and read them all at once?  I couldn't decide at first, then decided to wait, and then broke down and bought the paperback.

I don't have a lot to say about The Way of Kings, except that it is amazing, and I loved it!  The level of detail in his world-building alone puts any other fantasy novel I've ever read to shame.  Yet I never felt overwhelmed with details, and there were no massive "info dumps."  The information flows throughout the story in a logical and consistent manner, and makes the process of learning about the world of Roshar feel natural.  One of the characters is an artist, and tucked into her chapters are copies of pages from her sketchbook showing drawings and notes about the flora and fauna of the world around her, seamlessly showing the reader more about the world without interrupting the story itself.

The diversity and range of the characters themselves was another thing I loved about this novel.  Each character is unique and fully realized, and each is fascinating in his or her own way.  The pacing of the story is very good, and considering the number of pages in this book, that's an important point.  I never felt that the story was dragging at all.

Overall, I think this is an amazing beginning to what I'm sure will be an incredible series.  Sanderson is a master at telling detailed, intriguing, and interesting stories, and The Way of Kings shines brighter than anything he has done to date, in my opinion, including the wonderful work he has done with finishing the Wheel of Time series.  I give The Way of Kings five stars, and I can't wait to find out what he has in store for the citizens of Roshar in the rest of The Stormlight Archive.
