Teaser Tuesday - Catching Fire, by Suzanne Collins

Teaser Tuesdays is a weekly bookish meme, hosted by MizB of Should Be Reading. Anyone can play along! Just:
* Grab your current read
* Open to a random page
* Share two (2) “teaser” sentences from somewhere on that page
* BE CAREFUL NOT TO INCLUDE SPOILERS! (make sure that what you share doesn’t give too much away! You don’t want to ruin the book for others!)
* Share the title and author, too, so that other Teaser Tuesday participants can add the book to their To Be Read (TBR) Lists if they like your teasers!

----------

After finishing Steelheart by Brandon Sanderson, I decided that I had better try to get Catching Fire read before I see the movie.  I think almost everyone in the world has already read this years ago, so many of you will recognize this Tease, I'm sure!

The Tease:

"I've spent all these weeks getting to know who my competitors are, without even thinking about who my teammates are.  Now a new kind of confidence is lighting up inside of me, because I think I finally know who Haymitch is.  And I'm beginning to know who I am.  And surely, two people who have caused the Capitol so much trouble can think of a way to get Peeta home alive."

This week I'm continuing to read Steelheart, by Brandon Sanderson.  It's a very good story and I'm quite enjoying it! In this scene, David comes face to face with Steelheart for the second time in his life.

The Tease:

"He'd changed little in the decade since he destroyed the bank.  He had that same arrogant expression, that same perfectly styled hair.  That inhumanly toned and muscled body, shrouded in a black and silver cape.  His fists glowed a soft yellow, wisps of smoke rising from them, and there was a hint of silver in his hair.  Epics aged far more slowly than regular people, but they did age."

This week I'm reading Steelheart, by Brandon Sanderson.  So far it's a fascinating read.
From Goodreads:
There are no heroes.
Ten years ago, Calamity came. It was a burst in the sky that gave ordinary men and women extraordinary powers. The awed public started calling them Epics.
But Epics are no friend of man. With incredible gifts came the desire to rule. And to rule man you must crush his wills.
Nobody fights the Epics... nobody but the Reckoners. A shadowy group of ordinary humans, they spend their lives studying Epics, finding their weaknesses, and then assassinating them.
And David wants in. He wants Steelheart—the Epic who is said to be invincible. The Epic who killed David's father. For years, like the Reckoners, David's been studying, and planning—and he has something they need. Not an object, but an experience.
He's seen Steelheart bleed. And he wants revenge.

The Tease:

"The video image showed the ground, with me waving my hand in front of the lens.  Then it turned on Nightwielder and my heart leaped.
I tapped the screen, freezing the image."

----------

Last week I started reading Born, by Tara Brown, which had been highly recommended to me by a friend.  I'm almost to the end of it now, and I have quite enjoyed it, but it's very different from the type of novels I usually enjoy and I've had a few issues along the way, trying to get comfortable with the author's writing style.  In spite of that, I've had a difficult time putting it down at night!  Today's Tease is from the very opening of Chapter 1, and sets the mood nicely...

The Tease:

"They say that the world is built for two, but in the silence of the old cellar, two feels like a long lost dream.  It's an ice cream cone on a boardwalk with the sun above and the sea below.  It's the wind rolling around you gently, trying to persuade in all the directions at once and mixing sand over your feet as your toes dig in.
It's a perfect place none of us tries to remember."

----------

I'm currently reading Beautiful Creatures by Kami Garcia.  I saw the movie earlier this year and quite enjoyed it, and didn't even realize it was based on a novel until after watching the film.  This will be the last Tease from Beautiful Creatures, as I finished it today. In this scene, Ethan finds himself in the middle of a violent confrontation that he has little chance of surviving...

The Tease:

"Fire is loud, full of rage and chaos and destruction.  And fire was all around me.  The smoke in the air was so thick, I was choking on it.  The heat was singeing the hair right off my arms.  It was like a vision from the locket, or worse, like the last of my nightmares - the one where Lena was consumed by fire."

The Tease:

"I walked back over to the hole and reached into my pocket.  I opened the handkerchief with the familiar initials, and lifted the locket up by its chain.
Nothing.
No visions, and something told me there weren't going to be any more.
The locket had led us here, showed us what we needed to see."

I finished Lady of Ashes last week, and spent part of the weekend trying to decide what to read next, and finally settled on Beautiful Creatures by Kami Garcia.  I saw the movie earlier this year and quite enjoyed it, and didn't even realize it was based on a novel until after watching the film.

The Tease:

----------

I'm about a quarter of the way through Lady of Ashes, by Christine Trent, but was informed via email today that an e-hold (my very first!) that I'd placed with my local library was ready for download!  Huzzah!!  How exciting - my first e-library book!  The thrill!  The joy!!

The complications... Holy hell but it was difficult!  I thought setting up the reader to place the hold was complicated, but that was nothing.  However, an hour later and multiple new logins, ID's, and passwords and I finally prevail!  It downloaded!  It works!!

So, tonight, in celebration, we shall have a Tease from the opening chapter of Insurgent:

The Tease:

"I wake with his name in my mouth.
Will.
Before I open my eyes, I watch him crumple to the pavement again. Dead.
My doing."

----------

Last week I finished City of Bones, and the ebook of Divergent was on sale, so I thought I would give it a try.  I finished it quickly, within just a few days, and I seriously enjoyed it.  So I thought I would feature a Tease from Divergent, even though I've already finished reading it.  The main character is a 16 year old girl named Tris, who is undergoing a series of tests to determine if she can join society.  But there is something different about her that puts her in great danger, and someone is trying very hard to make sure that Tris doesn't succeed.

The Tease:
"I shift a few inches forward, hoping I am still hidden.  Whoever that voice belongs to, she is pulling the strings; she is responsible for Eric's leadership position; she is the one who wants me dead.  I tilt my head forward, straining to see them before they turn the corner.
Then someone grabs me from behind."

----------

I'm currently about 3/4 of the way through City of Bones, by Cassandra Clare.  I had not planned to read this series so soon, figuring that I'd read it "someday."  But then I saw the movie trailer for City of Bones, and I desperately want to see it, so I decided to read the book first.  It's better than I thought it would be - it's your basic good vs. evil story, but with several twists.  The author has created a very interesting world and mythology for her story that makes it much more than the typical "good guys fight demons" story that we see so often.

In this scene, Clary has just learned the truth about her mother and father - a truth that she maybe was not prepared to hear...

The Tease:
"Clary could hear her blood pounding in her ears.  She felt as if her life had been built on a sheet of ice as thin as paper, and now the ice was beginning to crack, threatening to plunge her into the icy darkness below.  Down into the dark water, she thought, where all her mother's secrets drifted in the currents, the forgotten remains of a shipwrecked life."

So last week I finished Theft of Swords, Volume One of the Riyria Revelations, by Michael J Sullivan, and began reading City of Bones, by Cassandra Clare.  I had not planned to read this series so soon, figuring that I'd read it "someday."  But last weekend I saw the movie trailer for City of Bones, and it looks so good that I desperately want to see it, so I think I should read the book first.  I'm almost halfway through, and I must admit the book is better than I expected.  In this scene, Jace gives Clary a bit of a warning.

The Tease:
""Don't order any of the faerie food," said Jace, looking at her over the top of his menu.  "It tends to make humans a little crazy.  One minute you're munching a faerie plum, the next minute you're running naked down Madison Avenue with antlers on your head.  Not," he added hastily, "that this has ever happened to me.""

Book Review - The Hunger Games

The Hunger Games Trilogy, by Suzanne Collins
1. The Hunger Games    2/20/2012    * * * *
2. Catching Fire
3. Mockingjay

From Goodreads:
"In the ruins of a place once known as North America lies the nation of Panem, a shining Capitol surrounded by twelve outlying districts. The Capitol is harsh and cruel and keeps the districts in line by forcing them all to send one boy and one girl between the ages of twelve and eighteen to participate in the annual Hunger Games, a fight to the death on live TV.

Sixteen-year-old Katniss Everdeen, who lives alone with her mother and younger sister, regards it as a death sentence when she steps forward to take her sister's place in the Games. But Katniss has been close to dead before—and survival, for her, is second nature. Without really meaning to, she becomes a contender. But if she is to win, she will have to start making choices that will weigh survival against humanity and life against love."

My Thoughts:
I think that I've mentioned before how I decided to boycott/avoid/remain-cool-by-not-following-the-crowds regarding The Hunger Games, back when I rebooted this blog in the summer of 2010 when Mockingjay was released.  It seemed like the entire internet went insane with anticipation as the release date drew closer, and once it arrived it seemed nearly impossible to go online to a book blog anywhere with it being mentioned.  So I ignored it and went about my business, thinking that maybe "someday" I'd check it out to see what all the fuss was about.

When the movie was announced, and casting began, I followed along, but not really caring who was cast, and again ignoring the "Team Peeta" and "Team Gale" badges popping up everywhere.  Not until this last fall when the movie trailers began did I start to think that this story might be interesting, and as my desire to watch the film grew to a fevered pitch, I finally decided that I should read the book first.  And I am sooooo glad that I did!  I downloaded the book to my NookColor, and very nearly read it straight through in just a day and a half.

So, because reviews and information about the book are plentiful, I'm not really going to talk much about the story itself.  Unless you're living under a rock you already know the basics anyway.  Instead, I'm just going to talk about what I liked and didn't like.

Generally speaking, I LOATHE books that are written in first person present tense.  It presents such a limited point of view and almost always sabotages the story itself in some manner.  But I have to admit that in The Hunger Games, it "sort of" works.  Not really, because there's tons of things that could have made the story better if we weren't locked into only Katniss' POV, but you quickly get used to it and because of the quick pacing of the story, you have very little time to even think about it.

That's the other thing, the pacing is great.  The story grabs you by the throat and drags you along so quickly that once you're in, you're in it for the long (short?) haul.  You can't put the book down for fear of what will happen next.  The only exception to that is a section towards the end where Katniss and Peeta spend what feels like a VERY long time in a cave.  It's really only a few days, but it felt like forever.  But then suddenly the pace picks up again and we're hurtling headlong to the end and BOOM it's over!

I also liked that even though the story is aimed at teens, and is about teens, the author doesn't really shy away from the horror, the icky, the evil, and the violence.  It's all there, it's all in the open, and it's all horrifyingly awful.  There's no way that you can kid yourself into believing that the government is right, or good, or that this is the best way to do things.  Around the web discussions are even now taking place regarding why the general population hasn't revolted against the evil of the government at some point in the previous 74 years since the Hunger Games were instituted, and there are no easy answers, and the author doesn't try to sugar coat that fact.

What I don't like?  Well, the world-building aspect of the story is shoddy in places, for one thing.  The story moves so quickly that one doesn't always realize it (or even care) at first, but there are plot holes that are miles wide regarding the way the world works and how the government is set up.  (Just one example that has been used before on other blogs and reviews, but District 12 produces coal for the Capitol. But the level of technology enjoyed by the Capitol - levitating high-speed electric trains, invisible force-fields, hover-ships with cloaking shields - is so far BEYOND coal energy that I'm not really even sure what the Capitol did with the coal once they got it). I'm more than willing to suspend my disbelief about a lot of things when it comes to my reading, so it didn't bother me THAT much, but at the same time I think an author really should try a little harder to make everything work and fit together.

What did bother me, and does still, is how an entire nation of adults could somehow find it acceptable that the government allow such an atrocity as the Games to exist in first place.  In the story we are told that the Games have been happening for 74 years, and I can sort of see how the current population might (MIGHT!) be desensitized to the horror of having 24 teens fight to the death.  If that's all you've ever known, well, I suppose that's all you know.  But how did the population manage to swallow their objections during the first five, ten, twenty years, when people could still remember what it was like to NOT revel in the blood & violence perpetrated by and against children?!  How does a society get to this point in the first place?

Well, this cautionary tale of a dark and violent future certainly makes for interesting discussions regarding morals and ethical dilemmas, that's for sure!  As you can see above, I gave The Hunger Games four stars, and I am very glad that I read it.  I don't know that I would be willing to re-read it, which is the only reason it doesn't get five stars.  But it is certainly worth the read, and in spite of my issues with the story, I would even go so far as to say that I think more people SHOULD read it.

Have you read The Hunger Games?  What did you think of the book?  Leave me a comment below and let me know if you agree or disagree with me - But only about the book itself, please!  We'll talk about the movie next time!

Reading Stuff...

So, upon completion (late last night) of The Mephisto Club, by Tess Gerritsen, I have now officially finished all of the books that I either received for Christmas, been loaned, or just randomly had laying around my room that I hadn't read yet.  I've been pushing to get caught up on everything that I already HAD before I purchased anything new.

So now I'm all caught up, and that leaves me with a bit of a dilemma.

When I revived this blog a year and half ago, "Mockingjay" - the 3rd book in the Hunger Games trilogy (which I had never even heard of) - was just about a month away from publication, and the internet was wild with anticipation.  Everyone with a book blog, it seemed, was reading advance review copies and writing ecstatically loving reviews, gushing endlessly about the wonders of Panem, the horrors of the Games, the extraordinary prowess of Katniss, and running rampant with speculation of which boy she would end up with.   Team Peeta and Team Gale badges began appearing on every YA blog, and I began to seriously wonder what kind of strange world I had wandered into with my whole "Hey let's start a blog where I can talk about books!" idea.

Then "Mockingjay" was actually released.  The hubbub and commotion surrounding the series escalated by a factor of 10, reaching nauseating proportions, and I decided that this whole YA/Hunger Games/feverish obsession was simply not for me, and vowed a solemn and sacred vow that I would not be joining the crowds, would not be swayed by peer pressure, and would not be reading this series!

A vow that I am now about to break.

Because, as I'm sure you already know, the movie is coming out in March 2012 (next month!), and every time I see a preview for it I really really really really want to see it.  I know - I'm so ashamed of myself, but sweet grilled cheezus I really do! And I have a very strict rule that, whenever possible, if a movie is based on a book, I always make a point to read the book first.  (This is the only reason I read Twilight, because I wanted to see the movie.  What a mistake that was...).

Thus you see my dilemma.  I am now required to read a book that I vowed I would not read.  I know, #FirstWorldProblems, but still...

And so it is, my dear little Little Addicts, that this weekend I will be downloading "The Hunger Games" to my NookColor and begin reading it.  Try not to think any less of me for breaking my vow.

But if this weekend you happen to notice a strange and eerie coldness emanating from beneath the ground, or see something that looks suspiciously like a pig soaring above the clouds, at least now you will know why.
