One of my reading goals for 2014 is to reread some of my favorite books, and I'm beginning with one of my all-time favorite fantasy novels. Many people don't care for it, but I don't even understand those people.  I love this story, and while it might not be perfect, it's pretty darn close in my mind.  For a good number of years, Prince Rohan - in spite of, or maybe because of, his flaws - was the perfect man in my eyes and definitely my first Book Crush.

This week we see Rohan through his sister's eyes for a brief moment at the funeral of their father...

I've decided that in 2013, I'm going to spend some of my time rereading a few of my old favorites, and so last week I started one of my favorite fantasy novels.  Many people don't care for it, feeling that it is poorly written, plotted, and that the characters and themes are unoriginal.  I don't understand those people.  I love this story, and I love the characters, and while it might not be perfect, it's pretty darn close in my mind.  For a good number of years, Prince Rohan - in spite of, or maybe because of, his flaws - was the perfect man in my eyes and definitely my first Book Crush.

Last week I took our Tease from Chapter 1, where we were introduced to Prince Zehava, the grand Patriarch of the desert.  This week, let's meet Sioned, a young Sunrunner destined to marry Zehava's son Rohan.

The Tease:

"When Sioned was three years old, the death of her parents left her brother Davvi, her elder by twelve winters, Lord of River Run.  Within a few years he married...but the new Lady of River Run was the possessive sort...Thus she purchased Sioned's entry into Goddess Keep. 

There she found companionship among the other students and knowledge enough to feed her ravenous appetite for learning.  The small oddities that her sister-by-marriage derided as "fey" turned out to be indications that she had the faradhi gift and could become a Sunrunner. 

Not everyone who west to Goddess Keep became faradhi, and Lady Andrade did not tolerate arrogance among those who could, or envy among those who could not.  But there were certain distinctions involved in becoming a Sunrunner: the rings of earned rank and periodic visits to the grove of pines near the keep. 
In the year 693, when Sioned was sixteen and had earned the first silver circle on her right middle finger, she went to this place where, if her talents were strong and the Goddess was disposed to revelations, she might glimpse her future."

So let's kick this off with a tease from the very first page of the book, shall we?  I'm not even going to apologize for breaking the two sentence rule.

The Tease:

"Prince Zehava squinted into the sunlight and smiled his satisfaction.  All the signs were good for the hunt today: claw marks on the cliffs, wing marks on the sand, and the close cropping of bittersweet plants along the canyon ridges.  But the prince's perceptions were more subtle and had no need of these obvious signs.  He could feel the presence of his prey all along his skin, scent it in the air, sense it in every nerve.  His admirers said he could tell when the time was ripe for the hunt simply by glancing at the sky.  His enemies said it was not surprising that he could sense such things, for he himself had been dragon-spawned."

2013 Reading Review

At the end of 2012 I promised myself that I was going to try to read more books in 2013, and write more reviews.

I did manage to read a few more more books than in 2012 (according to Goodreads I read 25 books total, with A Memory of the Light being the longest) but I failed miserably at writing more reviews.

That's an issue that I find myself wrestling with, and ultimately is the reason I haven't written as many this last year.  I feel like I'm not really "qualified' to "review" books.  I don't know why though.  What makes one "qualified" to write a review?  Further, does what I actually write about a book qualify AS a review?  I don't know how to answer these questions, and I kind of fell off the wagon, so to speak, and didn't even try.  But I do enjoy talking about books, so this year I'm going to TRY to try harder.

And If that doesn't say commitment, folks, I don't know what does!

But you know what I mean, I'm sure.  So - on to the books!!

In 2013 I read 25 books in total.  Somehow, this year became the "Accidental Young Adult Year," because 13 of those books, or 52%, were YA.  (I think?  Again the definition is somewhat nebulous to me).  And while I have been somewhat indifferent to YA in general, after reading so many this year, I believe I'm beginning to understand why they are so popular among "Adult Adults."

I've always had the impression that YA books are always written from the POV of females, usually teen girls - like The Hunger Games or Divergent.  And while there's nothing wrong with that and I applaud the fact that there are so many books for, by, and about girls and young women, I have to admit that I found it very refreshing to find YA books with a male POV (like Beautiful Creatures), or a POV that shifted between the male and female POV (like the Sky Chasers series), providing what to me feels like a more balanced approach to storytelling.  But without a doubt, my eyes have been opened and I no longer feel that YA books are somehow "less than" Adult novels.

I've noticed a lot of bloggers talking about their reading plans and goals for 2104.  I think that's a great idea from a blogging viewpoint, but not so much fun from a reading viewpoint.  I don't want reading to feel like a chore.  Ever.

But having said that, of course, here's my reading plans for 2014:
1.  Read whatever the heck I want.
2.  Revisit some of my old favorites.
3.  Continue reading what I like.

The last few years I've noticed that I've gotten super caught up in trying to stay current with what's being published.  Unfortunately, I just don't have that much time, and as a result I've neglected some of my faithful friends that I like to pull out and reread every few years.  In fact, I've already started!

I've started rereading Dragon Prince by Melanie Rawn, one of my all-time favorite fantasy novels, and while I'm not going to treat it like an actual "Read and React" feature, I am going to try to put the book down every couple of chapters and talk about it here on the blog as I work my way through it.  If anyone would like to join me in discussing it I think that would be fantastic and I would welcome your thoughts and comments!  But more about that later; let's get on with what I read in 2013 before this becomes the never ending blog post!

I'm currently reading Gameboard of the Gods (Age of X #1) by Richelle Mead.  Unlike many of her other novels this is adult oriented, and so far it is really very good.

Wow!  I can't believe that I almost forgot Teaser Tuesday AGAIN!  But, it is still Tuesday, and better late than never, right?!

Over the holidays I read the first two books in the Sky Chasers series, Glow, and Spark, by Amy Kathleen Ryan.  I really enjoyed them, and am looking forward to reading the third in the series, Flame.

Last week a friend loaned me a book that I've started and am really liking a lot - Gameboard of the Gods (Age of X #1) by Richelle Mead.  Unlike many of her other novels this is adult oriented, and so far it is really very good.  In this scene, Justin March - who has just been retrieved from exile in Panama - is easing back into his old job as an investigator of religious groups and supernatural claims.  He's been recalled to solve a string of murders with ceremonial and ritualistic elements that no one else has been able to solve.  And the killer - or killers - will certainly strike again soon...

The Tease:

"His first task for SCI actually wasn't a visit to the murder sites or even the religious groups he'd tagged as possible culprits.  He'd meant what he said to Cornelia: He had someone he was certain could crack the video.  If it really was faked."

I started reading World War Z last week, and so far it's OK.  I'm not 100% sure that I'm down with the format, or style of the writing, but so far it's pretty good.

I've just started World War Z this weekend.  I've been wanting to read it for awhile, then kind of forgot about it, then my interest was renewed when the movie came out earlier this year, then I forgot about it again until this weekend when I found it on sale!  So far it seems to be pretty good, though I've just barely started.
